Re-Lax Silver Band Fund Raiser
Yes my friends it's that time of year again, on the 16th of August '03 a 5-a-side tournament will be held at Hazelwood Centre to raise money for the Corby Purple Star band. The rules are as last year:
The Tournament will consist of 8 teams, two groups of four
Each game will be 12 minutes long
Players are not allowed inside the semi circle
No sex between players on or off the pitch
This year, D-Lax's B Team, Re-Lax, will be represented by;
Al Dunion, Sean Lafferty, Mark Wylie, Chris Madden, and Dean Walden.
Well,
it was another scortcher on this fine hot summers day! The coals on the barbie were starting to simmer,
the alcohol was flowing and the sun was shining..perfect condiditons to show some fools how to
play football.
* eating ice pops may not guarantee you win things
Once again the 'home crowd' was not so hospitable towards the english boys with no affection
for Glasgow Rangers FC. Whom only made it worse when the two flare players turned up wearing
hairbands.
The group stages passed fair quickly, With Dean banging in the goals, aided by mark and a
couple of long range rockets from Sean 'Beckham' Lafferty. Re-Lax continued where they left
of last year...unbeaten.
As the festivities continued with an abundance of beer and barbequed food, the Re-Lax players chose to stick
to wet towels and ice pops! (the official snack of champions*) and it payed off with a place in the final
for the youngsters against some cockney rude boys. Re-Lax took an early lead through Golden Boot winner
Dean Walden, but as we all know, any Dlax team is not a defensive team. The Londoners pulled one back as
Re-Lax tried to uncomfortably sit on a 1-0 lead. PENALTIES.
With game level at 1-1 the crowd was split between the not so local London lads and the reigning champions.
Caught a little offguard by the unfamiliar support from the Rangers Club contingent, Re-Lax tried
to ignore the calls for 'Beckham' to show he'd earned the captain's armband. Refraining from a Celtic
like huddle the order of penalty takers was decided: Dean, Sean, Chris,
Mark, Dunion.
After only the second penalty Re-Lax were behind. Seans mis-hit penalty too close to the keepers legs,
rebounded out as the Londoners took a 1-2 lead. The following 5 penalties were scored, including a funky
'bunny hop' by Dunion as he confused hiself with the one-step run up, but still managed to keep his shot below
the bar to keep the pressure on. Dunion remained centre stage, this time in goal, to block the remeaining
penalty to take it into sudden death. Dean once again slotted his penalty away with no nerves, bringing it
back round to Seans turn. Blocking out the chants of 'Miss, Miss, Miss' he stroked home a confident
shot. 6-6. Chris once more put the ball down and calmly sent the keeper the wrong way. The
pressure was now on the challengers, and it told as the final and decisive kick was slammed well, well wide,
handing the trophy back to Re-Lax.
